Laminar Air Flow (LAF) Unit

Laminar Air Flow (LAF) Clean Bench

A Laminar Air Flow (LAF) Unit (also known as a clean bench) is an enclosed cabinet designed to create a sterile, particle-free working environment for sensitive laboratory and industrial processes. By drawing air through a multi-stage filtration system and exhausting it in a smooth, unidirectional stream, it prevents cross-contamination.

Key Technical Specifications

  • ๐Ÿงผ Filtration: H14 HEPA filters (99.999%) & washable pre-filters.
  • ๐Ÿ’จ Velocity: Uniform speed between 0.3 to 0.5 m/s (90 FPM).
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Monitoring: UV germicidal lamps and pressure gauges.
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Frame: SS 304/316L or powder-coated steel.

Common Applications

  • ๐Ÿงช Biology: Protects cell cultures and bacterial samples.
  • ๐Ÿ’Š Pharma: Ensure sterility during prep of injectables.
  • ๐Ÿ“Ÿ Electronics: Dust-free assembly of microchips.

Choosing Between Vertical and Horizontal Flow

Feature Vertical Laminar Flow Horizontal Laminar Flow
Airflow Direction Top to bottom (downward) Back to front (toward user)
Operator Protection Better; air doesn't blow at user Minimal; air blows toward user
Space Efficiency Compact footprint; saves floor space Requires more rear clearance
Best Used For Bulky equipment, hazardous powders Electronics, delicate media prep
